Too Big to Print? We'll Cut It Up

Every printer has a box it can work inside, and plenty of good models are bigger than it. That isn't the end of the job. We split the model into sections, print them separately, and put them back together.
Answer three questions first
- Which surfaces will people actually see?
- Does it need to come apart again later?
- Does the joint carry load?
Splitting is often better, not worse
People assume a part in sections is a compromise. Usually it's an upgrade.
Each section can be oriented on its own. A single huge print forces one orientation for the whole thing, which means some faces come out well and others don't. Split it and every piece gets the angle that suits it.
Supports drop away too. A shape that needs heavy support as one piece will often need none at all once it's cut along the right plane, and that means a cleaner surface underneath.
Then there's risk. A forty-hour print that fails at hour thirty-eight is forty hours gone. Four ten-hour prints are not. If one fails we reprint that one.
Where the seam goes
This is the part worth your input. A joint placed along a natural edge, a change in shape, or a color break is close to invisible. The same joint running straight across the front face is the first thing anyone notices.
Tell us which side faces the room and we'll hide the seam accordingly.
How the pieces join
Glued. Superglue holds PLA and PETG well. Epoxy is slower but fills small gaps and ends up stronger. Fine for anything that isn't structural.
Pinned. We add alignment pins so the sections only fit together one way. Worth it on anything large, and it makes assembly a two-minute job rather than a fiddly one.
Bolted. Captive nuts and bolts or heat set inserts, for parts that need to come apart again or need real strength across the joint.
Magnets. For sections you want to separate often, or a display piece that needs to travel.
Sections can be different colors
Since each piece prints on its own, a two-tone or three-tone result costs nothing extra. No filament swapping, no purge waste. If your model has a natural color break, splitting there gets you multicolor for free.
When splitting is the wrong answer
A joint is a weak point unless it's designed not to be. If the natural cut line falls exactly where the load concentrates, a glued seam will fail there. Same for anything that has to hold water or air. We'll either move the joint, bolt it, or tell you the part wants a different approach.
What to tell us
Send the model and the finished size you want. Say which face people will see, whether it needs to come apart later, and whether anything hangs off it or sits on it. We'll work out the cut lines and show you where the seams will land before we print.
