Multicolor Printing: What It Costs and When It's Worth It

We can print up to 13 colors in a single part. That surprises people, and the next question is always some version of "so why isn't everything multicolor?" Color is priced by change, not by count.
Answer three questions first
- Are the colors decorative, or do they do a job? Labels, warning markings and keyed parts are different from looks.
- How small is the smallest colored detail?
- Could this be separate pieces instead?
The third one decides more quotes than people expect.
One nozzle, many swaps
Our machines print color by swapping filament mid-print, not by laying down several colors at once. Every change means flushing the old material out of the nozzle before the new one runs clean. That flush costs a few grams of plastic and a chunk of time, every single time.
So the driver isn't how many colors you use. It's how often the printer switches between them.
Bands are cheap, mixing is not
A part with six colors stacked in horizontal bands changes color six times over the whole print. Barely more expensive than a single-color version.
A part with three colors interleaved across every layer changes three times per layer, for hundreds of layers. On a tall model the flushed material can outweigh the part itself, and the print can take several times longer. Same model, same machine, wildly different quote.
Group your colors vertically where you can. It's the biggest cost lever you control.
Where multicolor beats paint
Embedded text and logos. Color running all the way through the part rather than sitting on the surface. Anything that has to stay legible after handling and wear. Painted detail chips. Printed detail doesn't. For signage, labeled controls, keyed components and branded parts, multicolor is the durable answer.
Two things to expect
A stock palette. We print from the filament we carry. We can't blend to an arbitrary brand color, though we can usually get close and will tell you how close.
Slight bleed at boundaries. Color transitions aren't surgical. Expect a fraction of a millimeter of blur where two colors meet. Fine for text at readable sizes, not for hairline detail.
When two parts beat one
If your part is two solid colors in two distinct regions, printing it as two pieces that snap or glue together is often cheaper, faster and cleaner than one multicolor print. We'll suggest it when it applies. Same goes for color detail finer than about a millimeter, which won't read the way you're picturing it.
What to tell us
Send the model with colors assigned, or just describe which parts should be which. Say whether the colors are decoration or information. If regrouping them would cut the cost meaningfully, we'll show you that option too.
